Annual killifishes are fishes that live their whole lives in just a few months and die, in Portuguese they say, killi anuais and in Spanish, killi anual. Cloud fish, or in Portuguese, peixes das nuvens, is a term used in Brazil that refers to how the people believe the fishes just appear in the temporary pools of water during the rainy season. Some people actually believe the fishes fall from clouds with the rain, giving the term, peixes or fishes, das nuvens or from the clouds, thus being called "Cloud Fishes". They also use the term in Spanish speaking countries in South America calling them, peces de las nubes, or also "Cloud Fishes".
